Size is one of the most fundamental decisions to make when it comes to choosing the right size floor rug.  The wrong size rug can make or break a room; and for a purchase that can help to define a room - it is important to get the sizing right.  Rugs define our space, add warmth and beauty, and feel good under our feet.

Taking the time to measure your space will ensure that your rug is scaled correctly to your room.

Sometimes it is hard to visualize the perfect sized rug for your space...however, we hope with the following steps it will make it much easier for you.

The first step is to measure the space your rug will be covering using a tape measure. One trick is to lay out newspaper on your floor in the area that you are considering covering. This will give your eye a visual reference point and help you figure out the proper size.  Also, make sure you consider doors and vents when measuring - you want to make sure your door can open and close over the rug.

Small Rugs for Living Rooms

Place the rug in front of the sofa. We recommend a rug that approximately the length of the sofa.  If possible, leave a few inches of exposed floor between the rug and sofa to accent the furniture.

When the rug is under a coffee table, make sure the rug is large enough to rest under all four legs of the table.

Medium Size Rug

Tuck the rug under the front legs of the sofa.  The back legs of the sofa can be situated on or off of the rug, depending on personal preference.

The rule of thumb is to leave 45cm to 60cm between the wall and rug, creating a border of exposed floor that frames the arrangement - equal on all four sides, if possible.

Large Living Room Rug

Select a room-sized rug that allows the furniture to “float” in the center. We recommend leaving 30cm to 45cm of exposed floor to create a border around the rug—equal on all four sides, if possible.

Select a room-sized rug that allows enough room for all chair legs to remain on the rug when the chairs are comfortably pulled away from the table.

Place a large rug under two legs of the bed, making sure that the floor is visible all around the bed. The rug should extend at least 60cm in length and width from the edges of the bed.
